If your lifted Chevy Tahoe is starting to feel loose in the front end, wearing tires unevenly, or struggling to hold alignment, the front upper control arms are worth checking. On lifted full-size GM SUV and pickup platforms, upgraded upper control arms can help correct suspension geometry, restore better alignment angles, and support more stable steering feel.

This guide walks through the basic installation flow for MaXpeedingRods front upper control arms designed for 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe models. Since this is a suspension-related job, installation should be handled by qualified personnel, and a professional wheel alignment should be performed after the work is completed.

What Comes in the Kit

The package includes 2 front upper control arms. The instruction sheet also highlights key dimensions including M12 x 1.75 thread, 14.5 millimeters, 55 millimeters, 246 millimeters, and 251 millimeters reference points.

Kit contents and control arm reference dimensions.

Before You Start

  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and safely support the front end with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for access to the upper control arms.
  • Keep the factory hardware nearby in case any OE hardware needs to be reused.
  • Prepare basic hand tools, including 10 millimeter, 18 millimeter, and 21 millimeter tools, a pry bar, hammer, torque wrench, strap, and grease gun.

Mechanic tip: Never rely on a jack alone. Always support the vehicle with jack stands before working around the suspension.

Step 1: Free the ABS Sensor and Brake Line Brackets

Start by removing the 10 millimeter bolt holding the ABS sensor line bracket to the control arm, then remove the 10 millimeter bolt securing the bracket to the spindle. Release the ABS sensor retaining clips and unplug the electrical connector. After that, remove the bolt securing the brake line to the upper control arm.

Remove the brake line bracket from the upper control arm.

Step 2: Mark the Factory Control Arm Position

Before loosening the main control arm fasteners, mark the original control arm position. This gives you a reference point when installing the new arm and helps keep the initial setup close before final alignment.

Mark the original control arm position before removal.

Step 3: Support the Lower Control Arm and Loosen the Ball Joint

Place a jack stand under the lower control arm to support the suspension and take the load off the upper control arm. Loosen the upper ball joint nut with an 18 millimeter wrench, but do not remove it completely yet.

Support the lower control arm before separating the ball joint.

Carefully strike the side of the steering knuckle near the upper ball joint with a hammer until the ball joint separates from the knuckle. Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud.

Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.

Step 4: Remove the Factory Upper Control Arm

Apply downward pressure on the control arm with a pry bar, then remove the ball joint nut.

Apply downward pressure and remove the ball joint nut.

To prevent over-extension and protect related components, secure the knuckle inward toward the vehicle with a strap.

Secure the knuckle inward to prevent over-extension.

Next, remove the two 21 millimeter nuts on the outer side of the control arm mounting brackets. Take out the cam bolts and cam plates, then move the control arm up and down while pulling outward to free it from the brackets.

Step 5: Install the New Upper Control Arm

Install the new upper control arm into the mounting brackets. Align it according to the marks made earlier, then attach the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the control arm bolts and ball joint nut, making sure the alignment marks match on both sides.

Torque the control arm nuts to factory specifications. Then tighten the ball joint nut to 50 foot-pounds.

Install the new upper control arm and attach the ball joint to the knuckle.

Step 6: Reconnect the Brake Line, ABS Wire, and Grease the Ball Joint

Reinstall the 10 millimeter bolt securing the brake line to the upper control arm. Secure the ABS wire and reconnect the electrical connector. Make sure the brake line and ABS wiring are routed safely and are not stretched, pinched, or rubbing against moving suspension parts.

Thread the grease fitting into the ball joint, snug it down with a 7 millimeter wrench, and apply several pumps of grease. Do not over-grease the ball joint; watch the dust boot and stop before it becomes overfilled.

Install the grease fitting and apply grease carefully.

Step 7: Repeat on the Other Side and Lower the Vehicle

Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Repeat the same process on the opposite side of the vehicle. Once both sides are complete, lower the vehicle to the ground and final-tighten the lug nuts to the correct torque specification with a torque wrench.

Final Check and Maintenance

After installation, verify that all fasteners are torqued to specification, check clearance between all components, and confirm the steering operates correctly without binding. A professional wheel alignment is recommended after installation. If the vehicle is equipped with ADAS systems, recalibration may also be required.

After the first 500 miles, re-torque all related nuts and bolts. Inspection and re-torque should also be included in routine service intervals.

Replacing front upper control arms is more than a simple parts swap, especially on a lifted Tahoe. Proper installation helps support suspension geometry, alignment range, and front-end stability. Take your time, protect the brake and ABS lines, torque the hardware properly, and do not skip the alignment.
