Adding an oil cooler kit is one of those upgrades that sounds simple at first. You mount the cooler, route the oil lines, install the sandwich adapter, and help keep oil temperatures under control. But as deadbeatgarage shows in this video, the most important part often happens before the install: checking if the kit actually fits your vehicle.

In the video, he test-fits a MaXpeedingRods 30-row aluminum oil cooler kit on a 4×4 S10 Blazer. The Blazer already has a factory oil cooler and oil filter relocation setup, with hard lines running through a tight engine bay. Replacing that complicated factory layout with a cleaner external oil cooler setup seemed like a smart idea, but the 4WD layout made fitment more challenging than expected.

Why Consider an Oil Cooler Kit?

Oil temperature matters, especially on modified cars, turbo builds, track cars, drift cars, and hard-driven street cars. When an engine is pushed harder, oil has to do more than lubricate. It also helps carry heat away from critical engine components.

A dedicated engine oil cooler gives hot oil another place to shed heat before returning to the engine. For cars with added power, tight engine bays, or frequent high-load driving, a universal oil cooler kit can be a practical cooling upgrade.

The MaXpeedingRods 30-row oil cooler kit is designed for builds that need extra cooling support. It features a 30-row aluminum oil cooler, AN10 fittings, braided oil cooler hoses, an air guide kit, and a thermostatic oil filter sandwich adapter.

A Closer Look at the MaXpeedingRods Oil Cooler Kit

One of the most useful parts of the video is the close-up look at the kit itself. The sandwich adapter installs near the oil filter location and gives oil a path to flow through the external cooler. The kit also includes different thread inserts, making it easier to match different oil filter setups.

The built-in thermostat is a key feature. Engine oil does not need maximum cooling all the time, especially when the engine is still cold. With a thermostatic sandwich adapter, oil can warm up normally first. Once it reaches the proper temperature range, the thermostat opens and allows oil to flow through the cooler.

The kit also includes adjustable fittings and pre-assembled oil lines, which help with routing. The included shroud or air guide is another helpful detail, since airflow is a big part of how well an oil cooler performs. A cooler works best when it is mounted where air can pass through it instead of being hidden in a dead zone with poor airflow.

Why Fitment Matters Before Installation

This is where the 4×4 S10 Blazer became a good real-world example. On this Blazer, the front differential and driveshaft sit close to the oil filter area. That means there was not enough safe clearance for the oil filter to hang below the sandwich adapter.

Because of that, the 30-row oil cooler kit was not installed on this specific Blazer. But that does not make the test-fit a waste. It actually shows exactly what anyone should check before installing a universal oil cooler kit: oil filter clearance, fitting direction, hose length, line routing, cooler mounting space, and airflow.

A universal kit can work well on many builds, but every engine bay is different. A 2WD setup, a different engine layout, an engine swap, or a turbo project car may have much more room for the adapter, filter, lines, and cooler.

A Smart Cooling Upgrade for the Right Build

Even though the Blazer’s 4WD layout made the install too tight, deadbeatgarage still gave the kit a positive impression after assembling it and looking through the components. He even mentioned that it could make sense for another project, such as a turbo K24 build where extra oil temperature control may be more useful.

That is the right way to look at this MaXpeedingRods 30-row oil cooler kit. It is not a one-size-fits-every-vehicle shortcut, but it is a strong option for the right build. If you are not familiar with oil cooler installation, it is also worth checking the installation guide provided on the MaXpeedingRods product page before starting your own test-fit. The guide uses a Ford Fusion as the display installation vehicle, but since this is a universal oil cooler kit, you should still compare your own oil filter location, hose routing, cooler mounting space, and fitting direction before installation. 

For turbo cars, race cars, drift cars, engine swaps, and modified street builds, checking fitment first can help you decide whether an oil cooler kit is the next smart upgrade.
