Editor’s Note: This article is based on a video published by Backshed, featuring the installation and testing of maXpeedingrods adjustable coilovers on a Holden VS Commodore Ute. It highlights the product features, adjustment process and positive driving observations presented in the video.

Exploring the Adjustable Coilover Kit

The product featured in the video is the maXpeedingrods Adjustable Damper Coilover Kit for Holden Commodore VR/VS Sedan, Wagon and Ute 1993–1997.

During the product introduction, Backshed highlights the coilovers’ lowering capability, repeatedly referring to a maximum adjustment of approximately “100 mil,” or 100 mm. This figure reflects the description provided in the video.

Rather than limiting the vehicle to a fixed lowered position, the threaded coilover design allows the ride height to be adjusted. This gives owners more control over the Ute’s final stance and makes it possible to tailor the setup to different street or performance preferences.

The front units also feature adjustable spring platforms and damper adjusters. The spring platforms can be repositioned to change preload, while the adjusters at the top of the dampers allow the suspension response to be tuned with an Allen key.

Setting Up the Front Coilovers

Before installation, the two front coilovers were positioned side by side and measured along their threaded sections. Matching the initial measurements provided a consistent starting point for both sides of the vehicle.

The upper mounting components were then assembled before the coilovers were fitted to the Ute. Once installed, the suspension height was measured again, and further adjustments were made to keep the left and right sides consistent.

This part of the installation demonstrates one of the kit’s key advantages: ride height, spring preload and damping can each be adjusted to refine the suspension setup. These features provide greater flexibility than a conventional fixed-height spring-and-shock combination.

Adjusting Preload and Damping

The video includes several adjustments followed by short test drives. Changes to the spring platforms demonstrated how preload could be modified, while the top-mounted damper adjusters produced a noticeable difference in suspension response.

The ability to feel these changes during testing showed that the adjustment system offered a practical way to fine-tune the front suspension. By measuring both sides and making gradual changes, the setup could be refined according to the preferred balance between firmness and suspension response.

After the preload and damping settings were revised, the Ute delivered a more satisfactory result during the following drive. The suspension remained firm, providing the more direct and controlled feel associated with a sport-focused setup.

Driving Impressions and Recommended Applications

During the road test, the suspension was described as firm and suited to drivers looking for a sportier ride. The front end provided a more direct response, while the available adjustments made it possible to compare different suspension settings from behind the wheel.

Based on the installation and testing, Backshed considered the coilovers well suited to a lowered street car, drift car or track-focused build. For Holden Commodore owners seeking an adjustable stance and a firmer, more performance-oriented suspension feel, the kit provides useful control over ride height, spring preload and damping.
