Bringing a neglected 2015 BMW 550i back to life turned out to be a bigger project than Vehicle Virals initially expected. After discovering serious engine damage, the creator decided to install a remanufactured N63TU engine. But the original turbochargers also needed attention.

One turbocharger had visibly damaged compressor blades and noticeable shaft play, making replacement the sensible choice. With the rebuild budget already growing, the creator wanted to avoid the high cost of new OEM turbochargers.

Instead, the team chose MaXpeedingrods aftermarket replacement turbochargers as a more affordable option for the project.

Installing MaXpeedingrods Turbochargers on the BMW 550i

Before installation, the creator compared the new MaXpeedingrods units with the original turbochargers. He noted their similar ports and overall configuration, describing them as an OEM-style replacement at a considerably lower price.

The creator also highlighted the testing and balancing documentation included in the package. According to MaXpeedingrods’ product specifications, the MGT2256SL turbochargers undergo balancing tests using TURBOTECHNICS VSR3 equipment.

With the replacement engine installed, the team fitted the new turbochargers, replaced the gaskets, transferred the existing oil return lines, and secured the V-band clamps. They also routed the connections and supplied engine oil to the turbochargers according to the installation instructions.

The creator found the process relatively straightforward, thanks in part to the accessible turbocharger layout on the N63TU engine.

First Startup and Initial Impressions

Once the installation was complete, the team primed the engine and turbochargers before attempting the first startup. The rebuilt BMW fired up successfully, bringing the project a major step closer to completion.

Further work was still needed on the vehicle’s electrical and fuel systems. After those issues were addressed, the creator reported smooth engine operation, with no warning messages displayed during the final startup shown in the video. The team also observed no visible oil or coolant leaks during an inspection.

Although the video did not include a road test or long-term performance evaluation, the initial results were encouraging.

For this BMW 550i rebuild, MaXpeedingrods offered a budget-conscious replacement option with OEM-style fitment and documented balancing checks, helping the team move forward without the expense of new OEM turbochargers.
