A Suspension Refresh for a High-Mileage Transporter<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With around 170,000 miles on the clock, this 2010 VW Transporter T5.1 was ready for some attention underneath. After recently rebuilding the gearbox, the creator set out to tackle several remaining mechanical jobs, including the timing belt, water pump, brakes and suspension, all within the same week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the wider refresh, the front and rear suspension were stripped down for inspection. Worn bushes were replaced, while the suspension arms and subframe were cleaned and treated for rust before reassembly. With the old suspension removed and the surrounding components refurbished, it was time for a new setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installing MaXpeedingrods Coilovers<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For this build, the creator chose a set of MaXpeedingrods coilovers<\/u><\/a>. Having used the brand’s suspension on previous builds, he was already familiar with the product and shared his preference based on his own experience with different suspension kits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new coilovers were fitted as part of the Transporter’s front and rear suspension rebuild. Once the suspension components were back in place, attention turned to putting the rest of the setup together and adjusting the ride height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the key features of the MaXpeedingrods coilover kit is its adjustable ride height, allowing owners to tailor the vehicle’s stance rather than being restricted to a fixed suspension height. For this Transporter project, the creator chose to run the van close to its lowest setting, although he did not take the front suspension all the way down during the initial setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The installation also formed part of a broader undercarriage refresh. With the suspension arms reinstalled and the brake components refitted, the van was gradually brought back together, ready for its first start and drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Drive: How Did the New Coilovers Feel?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the van was back on its wheels, the difference in its stance was immediately noticeable. The rear suspension was set to its lowest adjustment position, while the front was left slightly higher. The creator was pleased with how the van looked and was ready to see how the new setup felt on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the first short drive, his reaction was straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Feels good. Feels planted. Absolutely planted.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also mentioned that the roads around his estate were quite bumpy, making this a familiar environment for getting a first impression of the suspension setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creator had not yet taken the front suspension to its lowest setting, but was already happy with the overall result. Alongside the refreshed suspension, the cleaned-up undercarriage and newly fitted brake components gave the Transporter a much tidier appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the creator, this was another successful step in the van’s ongoing transformation. The mechanical refresh had taken just a few days, with bodywork and a full respray planned as the next stage of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
